Trapiche Sapphires, like other trapiche gemstones, get their unique name from the Spanish word for a grinding wheel used to process sugarcane. This is because the pattern within these gemstones somewhat resembles the spokes of a wheel. The formation of this pattern is a result of a complex growth process where the sapphire crystal grows faster along its crystallographic axes, leaving the areas in between filled with other minerals and impurities. This results in the characteristic 'spoked wheel' appearance.
Trapiches were first documented in 1879, Colombia. The discovery of trapiche gemstones has added a unique and intriguing variant to the world of gemmology. Their unique patterns and formation processes evoke a sense of history and fascination, linking the worlds of agriculture and gemmology in a unique way.
Our Trapiche was sourced from Inverell, NSW, Australia. The region is referred to as 'Sapphire City' due to rich abundance of sapphire deposits. In the 1970's, there were over 100 sapphire mines in the area.
